Sleep Paralysis is a phenomenon in which people, either falling asleep or waking up, temporarily experience the inability to move. Scientifically its the transition state between wakefulness and rest characterized by complete muscle atonia (muscle weakness).

I’ve known several people who have had sleep paralysis, who have even made characters who share the same trait. I’ve never suffered from it myself but I find the folklore around it fascinating, because no matter what nation of origin it always has to do with the visitation of a demon or vengeful spirit who either sits on, restrains, or strangles said victim. And so I drew my own little depiction of it, complete with a demon girl puking black stuff on a guy.

I dunno, sue me.

Two character concepts from a story I’m stitching together out of two old ones. It doesn’t even have a working title right now but its basically in an alternate modern-day where magic use is a rare genetic trait.

“The U.S. government, after forcing magic-users onto reservations crosses the line with new taxes and sanctions and an uprising forces a stand-off between power magic users and armed forces. Each side solicits help from two of the most powerful witches in the entire world.”

I want the story to mainly focus on these two witches, their powers (which I still need to work out), and why they take the respective sides that they do:

Bordeux Singh is an Indian-French citizen who’s got a huge ego and a large main-stream following, as she does many late-night and morning talk show interviews. She takes the side of the American government in working to subduing the rebelling magic users.

Rudolf Rosenthal is a Canadian citizen who’s much more shy and reserved and despite her tattoos, scars, and clothing is fairly meek and somewhat shy. She’s only written a few books on magic but otherwise doesn’t like the attention. She takes the side of the antagonized American magic users.

Another illustration from my concept called “West” (I’ve done others, which can be found in my archives).

The man to the left is known as “Mr. Mojave” and the gal on the right is named “Shiharizati”. In the story of “West” they both personify good and evil, though it’s meant to be ambiguous which represents which. They can’t destroy one another and only exist to keep the other in check. They influence the main and supporting characters through the story and appear to face off against each other in the climax.

For those of you who might have only found me through tumblr, I have a (currently on hiatus) web-comic called “Step-Monster” on my Deviantart. It centers around a monster named Matilda who lives in a boy’s closet and ends up legally taking over as him and his older sister’s step-mother while their real single-mom is away in court-appointed rehab. Throw in an ex-child services agent named Roy who ends up dating Matilda and becoming the weird father figure and you have a pretty crazily stitched together family of sorts!

On of the big things I like playing with in stories is character dynamics in couples. Eddie and Sawyer personify that pretty well.

They’re from a story concept involving the human Eddie getting thrown into an inter-dimensional prison of sorts (explaining the monitoring collars in the first picture and Eddie’s clothes) full of all sorts of strange beings, where the slime-girl ends up falling for him hardcore. One of the subplots is them and the shenanigans of their “unconventional” relationship.

Burning Heat: Is a story concept of mine involving a special unit of psychic police officers Miami, Florida. Centered on two partner detectives named Larke Hernandez and Rocco Reeves, it follows them tracking down a dangerous ex-officer who’s pyrokinetic and might have a connection to all the cases of “spontaneous human combustion” that’s been striking politicians, judges, and other officials in the city one-by-one.

Also, Rocco wears a unit regulation helmet cause his psychic powers are so strong, they register out of the “safe zone”. He has to keep it on so he won’t explode innocent’s brains nearby when he’s using his powers in the line of duty.

Everyone’s favorite vampire Camilla taking a seat and enjoying a break from her travels. Living for about two thousand years gives you a LOT of time to see the world. Also, she’s much stronger than your “traditional” vampire, so walking around in the sunlight does next to nothing to her as long as she wears some SPF sunscreen.

Also that’s uhhhh fruit punch in that glass…yeah lets go with that…

“Is there any a purer love than that between a giant fat alien dragon thing, and his adoptive scientist father who found him as a baby in his crashed pod up in the arctic circle?”

Of course there isn’t! And so is the tale of these two characters from a concept of mine. The alien is named Fresno and his father is a scientist named Dr. Sasha Roman. Despite his size and look Fresno’s got the mentality of a home-schooled 15 year old, he’s the nicest guy you’ll ever meet, and he loves to make new friends!. Unfortunately for him…most people don’t wanna meet him cause he looks like he’ll eat them.

Two characters from a one-shot comic called “Ring of Fire” I’m doing for a special zine in the near future! It might blossom beautifully into an ongoing story but let’s not get ahead of ourselves too soon! More of my 2,000 year old vampire character: Camilla. Originally I had her hair colored blonde back when I still couldn’t decide, but it looks waaaaaay better white/silver. Also wanted to experiment with panel boarders vs. panel subjects.

Its good to note, that as a vampire she’s closer to a leech or a lamprey than a bat. Also according to this comic, she likes her privacy when she’s eating. ITS RUDE TO STARE PEOPLE.

Would you look at that! More colored art finally!

Here we have a group of characters from a concept of mine called “West”. Its got its various twists and turns, but boiled down its a standard adventure comic. This is the main group of the story:

Amelia Eastwood (bottom): Human/Deputy Sheriff. Fights using a kicking-focused martial arts style called “Desert Hawk”, doesn’t take your shit and won’t tolerate jokes about her hair. Favorite word in the dictionary is “Justice”.

Sherwood Baker (left): Jackalope/Preacher. Can run and jump faster than anyone in the west, but prefers not to fight and simply do “God’s Work”. Sometimes this means roughing someone up though.

Maria Alonzo (top): Human/Necromancer. Eccentric and somewhat creepy necromancer who can raise brightly colored skeletons of various sizes to do her bidding. Can also see and talk to ghosts on occasion.

Jodi (right): Pinata/Shape-shifter. Member of a race of pinata people who can shape-shift into various creatures (or mimic the appearances of specific people). Literally full of candy rather than organs, don’t try and break her open though. She’ll sit on you.

Running Elk (center): Human/Rain-dancer. Native American boy who has a distinct and special connection with nature, especially the weather. Is rather timid and shy. Cloud he rides corresponds to his mood so be nice to him!

Remember those colored pictures I uploaded earlier on in my Tumblr run of character’s from that idea called “Traitors”? Wellllllllll here’s a doodle I did of all of them kinda strolling along together. It was mainly to deduce their sizes in relation to each other (as you can see Ingram is pretty tiny while someone like Amarilla’s head barley fits in there). If your wondering where that parasite Prestige is at he’s in that human teenager in the middle. He spends very little of the story outside a host body.

Another character sketch!. Her name is Shiharizati and she’s a magical imp-like creature who can grant wishes and is Omnifarious (limitless shapeshifting). Ones summons her by saying her name after they make a contract with her. Her exact alignment (good or evil) is something I’ll keep to myself for now, but I kinda crafted her to be an odd fusion of Midna from “Twilight Princess” and the folk legend of “Rumpelstiltskin”.

Some concept sketches I did a while ago for a story that had the working title of “Strangeworld” and then was changed soon to the current official one of “Kashmir” (named after the name of the Osri’s massive empire). In it, humans serve this ruling class of dragon-like creatures called the Orsi and are pretty much second-class citizens. I just really wanted to work out what the Orsi looked like and their respective scale to people.
